The Nigerian Navy has charged its junior officers to strengthen tactical leadership and operational competence in response to the country’s evolving security challenges.

The Chief of Administration at Naval Headquarters, Jonathan Mamman, gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja at the closing ceremony of the Naval Base Abuja Junior Officers Development Programme 2026.

Mamman, who was represented by the Director of Administration, Adedokun Siyanbade, said the programme’s theme, “Improving Tactical Level Capacity for Operational Efficiency,” highlighted the need for continuous leadership and management training for junior officers in line with current security realities.

He said the initiative aligns with the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, to build a modern, agile and professional naval force capable of protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests and supporting national security operations.

According to him, Naval Base Abuja plays a strategic role in supporting Naval Headquarters and enhancing security within the Federal Capital Territory.

Mamman noted that experiences from operational theatres in the North-East and Niger Delta had reinforced the importance of strong tactical leadership and sound operational planning.

He said participants received training in leadership, operational planning, ethics, law, regimentation and drills, urging them to apply the knowledge in their various deployments.

He also commended the Commander and personnel of Naval Base Abuja for successfully organising the programme and urged the officers to uphold the Navy’s core values of integrity, professionalism and teamwork.

“Remain disciplined, focused and exemplary in conduct while taking full ownership of your responsibilities. Always strive for excellence and be good examples to your subordinates,” he said.

The Commander, Naval Unit Abuja, Oluseyi Oladipo, said the programme involved 19 participants drawn from Naval Base Abuja and its sub-units.

He described the training as a deliberate effort to strengthen tactical leadership capacity within the service, adding that it would enhance professionalism and improve performance in ongoing naval operations.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Ridwan Yusuf, thanked the naval leadership for the opportunity, describing the programme as impactful and career-enhancing.

Yusuf said the training had equipped officers with critical leadership and operational skills, pledging that participants would apply the lessons learned to improve efficiency and service delivery.

He also commended the resource persons, facilitators and organisers for ensuring the success of the programme.
