President Bola Tinubu, addressing political leaders from the South-South in Abuja on Tuesday, reaffirmed the vital role of the Niger Delta in Nigeria’s economy, describing it as “the goose that lays the golden egg.” He emphasized the need to protect and nurture the region to sustain its economic contributions.
Speaking at a meeting with the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Tinubu acknowledged the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, revealing that he had been monitoring the situation long before intervening. He stressed that lasting peace and prosperity in the region depend on strict adherence to the rule of law.
“The judiciary’s decisions must be respected,” the president said. “This is a nation governed by the rule of law. I would not be here as President without it. Once the court has spoken, that is final.”
He urged Niger Delta leaders to prioritize unity, peace, and selfless service, advising them to facilitate the implementation of court rulings.
“I am putting the ball in your court,” Tinubu said. “Go home, intervene, and counsel the governor. Pursue the path of peace and stability.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to community development, Tinubu praised the efforts of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and highlighted ongoing projects, including the coastal road initiative and planned port developments in the region.
King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom and Co-Chairman of the PANDEF Board of Trustees, commended Tinubu’s leadership and support for the South-South. Similarly, Obong Victor Attah, former governor of Akwa Ibom State and PANDEF reconciliation committee chairman, urged further intervention in Rivers State, warning of its potential impact on national stability.
The PANDEF delegation, comprising former governors, legislators, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth representatives, pledged their support for Tinubu’s administration and its efforts to foster regional development.
