Obasa Emerges Lagos Speaker For 3rd Consecutive Term

The Lawmaker representing Agege Constituency 1, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has been re-elected as Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly.

His election on Tuesday makes it the third consecutive terms Obasa is elected Lagos Speaker.

Mr. Obasa, believed to enjoy the backing of a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, was elected unopposed.

The APC is the majority party in the assembly.

The contest for who heads the assembly was subject of intense horse trading within the APC as various interest blocks pushed for their candidates to emerge speaker.

Obasa, the longest serving member of the Lagos State Assembly, was re-elected based on the nomination by Member-elect Temitope Adewale, representing Ifako-Ijaiye I.

The nomination was seconded by Member-Elect Sylvester Ogunkelu of Epe II State Constituency.

The immediate past Chief Whip of the State Assembly, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly.

Meranda, representing Apapa I State Constituency, was nominated by Member-elect Desmond Elliot (Surulere II). The nomination was seconded by Member-elect Tijani Suraju (Ojo II).
Both Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected unopposed.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the proclamation for the 10th Lagos State Assembly on Tuesday.

The Governor during his address urged the members of the Lagos State Assembly to work for the progress of Lagos State.

In 1999, he contested the seat of councilor at Agege local government under the Alliance for Democracy party and won. He served between 1999 and 2002.

He was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Agege Constituency I in 2007. He was reelected in 2011, 2015, 2019, and in 2023

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa , born 11 November 1972 is a legal practitioner, and a strong member of the ruling party. He was born in Agege in Lagos, Nigeria. He had his primary education at St Thomas Acquinas Primary School, Surulere, Lagos.

He then attended Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary school, Mushin, Ilasamaja, Lagos where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate. He received a bachelor’s degree in law from Lagos State University, Lagos in the year 2006.
