The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has announced that the Nigerian Army is leveraging technology to tackle prevailing security threats and enhance operational efficiency.

Shaibu made this declaration on Tuesday in Abuja while inaugurating the Directorate of Inspections and Compliance Project Inspections Workshop 2026.

The workshop, themed “Leveraging Technology: Panacea for Enhanced Inspection and Compliance,” was described by the army chief as both timely and crucial.

Represented by the Chief of Logistics, Maj.-Gen. Adekunle Adeyinka, Shaibu emphasized that the workshop signals a major shift towards modernization, with technology at the forefront of inspection, compliance, and operational oversight.

“By harnessing digital inspection platforms, real-time reporting, and data analytics, the Nigerian Army aims to boost transparency, accountability, and operational readiness,” he said.

Shaibu noted that technology-enabled inspections provide tools for performance improvement, standardization, and institutional learning, reinforcing public confidence in the Army as a disciplined and accountable institution.

“Inspections remain vital instruments for translating policies, plans, and projects into tangible operational outcomes.

Beyond oversight, inspections provide objective feedback, enabling commanders to identify gaps, optimize resources, enforce discipline, and sustain readiness in today’s complex operating environment,” he said.

He warned that traditional, manual inspection processes have become inadequate, highlighting the need for integrated, technology-driven solutions.

The COAS stressed that adopting digital systems aligns with his vision to transform the Nigerian Army into a professional, adaptable, and combat-ready force capable of fulfilling its constitutional mandate within a multi-agency environment.

Shaibu also emphasized the Army’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and personnel welfare. “As we embrace technology, we position the Nigerian Army as a forward-thinking institution capable of addressing modern challenges while safeguarding the welfare, safety, and operational success of our personnel,” he added.

Acknowledging potential challenges in transitioning to fully digital systems, Shaibu expressed confidence that the professionalism and dedication of the Army would overcome any obstacles.

He said the workshop would produce tangible outcomes to strengthen the Army’s capacity to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and citizens’ lives and property.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Directorate of Inspections and Compliance Project Inspections, Maj.-Gen. Auwalu Mahmuda, stressed the importance of technology-enabled inspections in the Army’s ongoing transformation.

He said the workshop marked a deliberate move towards integrated, data-driven systems that enhance operational readiness, resource optimization, and fiscal discipline.

“The workshop aims to equip participants with practical skills in digital data capture, inspection reporting, and compliance tracking.

Through presentations, interactive sessions, and case studies, participants will bridge the gap between policy intent and project execution,” Mahmuda said.

  1. He encouraged participants to actively engage, share experiences, and propose realistic methods for institutionalizing these technological tools across the Army.

Mahmuda expressed gratitude to the COAS for his strategic guidance and support.
