The Oyo State chapter of the Muslim Media Watch Group (MMWG) has condemned what it described as the misuse of social-media platforms by some Islamic scholars, labelling the conduct “preposterous, condemnable, unacceptable and a betrayal of public trust.”

In a press statement signed by its State Coordinator, Alhaj Mas’ud Akintola, and Secretary, Ustadh Abdullah Adewumi, the group lamented that some scholars resort to public insults and the “washing of dirty linen in public” whenever they are criticised.

According to the MMWG, the affected scholars appear to be carried away by the illusion of popularity, choosing to trade insults online when confronted with unfavourable situations rather than adhering to Islamic teachings on unity and restraint.
