The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has summoned a woman for tearing her husband’s international passport shortly after their arrival from abroad at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in the Ikeja area of Lagos State.
A viral video showed the woman destroying her husband’s passport at the Lagos airport on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
The woman was heard responding in rage after being asked why she tore the passport, saying: “Is it your passport?”
“If you want to sleep there, sleep there, this is Nigeria, this is where you will be,” she later told off her husband as she held the kids’ hands out of the walkway.
Speaking on the incident via a statement on Sunday, August 11, the NIS spokesperson, Kenneth Udo, said the woman had been identified and invited for further investigation.
According to Udo, if the allegations are substantiated, the individual’s actions breached the provisions of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Udo reiterated the commitment of the Service to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments.
Any individual who contravenes this section of the law is guilty of an offence and can face a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine.
