The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce an immediate nationwide shutdown of pornographic websites.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, lawmakers mandated internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to these sites under the new directive.
Dalhatu Tafoki, representing the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency, sponsored the motion, calling it a necessary step to “protect societal values.”
“Nigeria is a highly religious country, and all major religions forbid nudity and obscenity,” Tafoki stated. He emphasized the psychological and social risks associated with pornography, citing concerns raised by global experts. He also noted that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already enacted similar bans.
The House adopted the motion and assigned its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee implementation, with a report due in four weeks.
Speaker Tajudeen Abass warned that ISPs failing to comply would face sanctions, as lawmakers unanimously approved the motion through a voice vote.
