Highland Microfinance Bank has unveiled its latest product, the High-Hygiene WASH Loan, designed to expand access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities for Nigerians in need.

Speaking at the launch event in Jos, the bank’s Managing Director, Benjamin Mapac, described the product as a significant milestone in the institution’s drive to support community health and well-being.

Mapac explained that the loan facility was developed through a strategic partnership with Water.org, a global advocacy organisation for water access, and the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB), the umbrella body for all MFBs in Nigeria.

He noted that the initiative represents a new phase in the bank’s mission to “protect health, uphold human dignity, and make water and hygiene accessible to more people and communities.”

According to him, the bank has long witnessed the difficulties households and businesses face in maintaining reliable hygiene standards, prompting the development of a solution grounded in research and community insights.

“The WASH facility was designed with purpose, built on research, and refined with the input of those who understand hygiene challenges at both community and institutional levels,” he said.

Mapac highlighted that the loan covers the acquisition and construction of sanitation facilities, upgrades of existing toilet structures, and the provision of potable water. It attracts a low interest rate of 3% per month, with repayment tenures ranging from six to twelve months depending on loan size.

He emphasised that the launch also celebrates the value of collaboration. “Our partnership with Water.org has deepened our understanding of water-access realities, while working with NAMB has strengthened our community engagement,” he added.

To customers, he assured that the High-Hygiene WASH Loan reflects the bank’s commitment to offering reliable and affordable hygiene solutions that safeguard families, businesses, and communities.

“As we move forward, our message is simple: hygiene is not optional. Hygiene is essential. And with the High-Hygiene WASH Loan, we are making essential care more accessible, more affordable, and more effective for millions of Nigerians,” Mapac said.

NAMB’s Executive Secretary, Eddy Orok, praised the partnership with Water.org, noting its role in driving progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation). He commended Highland Microfinance Bank for championing the initiative.

Also speaking, Gilbert Okpono, Senior Relationship Account Manager at Water.org, described the product as transformative.

“This High-Hygiene loan gives families the power to access clean water and safe sanitation, transforming lives with dignity and hope. Together, we’re creating a future where every home enjoys health, safety, and opportunity,” he said.
