Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, will remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre following the decision of a Federal High Court in Abuja to defer ruling on his bail application.
The court, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, on Friday adjourned the matter until January 7, 2026, for a ruling on the bail applications filed by Malami, his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and Hajia Bashir Asabe, a staff member of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.
The defendants were arraigned on December 30 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy, procuring, disguising, concealing, and laundering proceeds of unlawful activities, contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
At Friday’s proceedings, lead defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, moved the defendants’ written bail applications. In response, EFCC counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the applications by filing a counter-affidavit.
The defence subsequently filed a further affidavit and a reply on points of law to counter the prosecution’s response.
However, when Iheanacho requested time to respond to the additional processes served on him in court, Daudu withdrew the further affidavit to avoid delays.
After hearing submissions from both sides, Justice Nwite adjourned the case until January 7, 2026, for ruling on the bail applications.
