The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that left world boxing champion Anthony Joshua injured and claimed the lives of two persons.
The police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed on Thursday that the driver is currently in custody while investigations into the incident continue.
The accident occurred on Monday around the Danco area of the expressway when the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN and conveying Joshua, collided with a stationary truck.
Two occupants of the vehicle — Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen — died in the crash.
Joshua survived the incident alongside his mother and two other passengers. He was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late Wednesday after doctors confirmed he was clinically stable and fit to continue his recovery at home.
In a joint statement, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for strength and comfort for their loved ones.
The governors also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support, as well as members of the public for their concern and prayers following the incident.
Anthony Joshua and his mother were also reported to have visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the deceased, whose bodies are being prepared for repatriation.
The state governments further commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism and dedication in the treatment of Joshua and other victims of the accident.
