Lagos State Prominent Indigenes have called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the state’s governorship position to qualified indigenes ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing the need for fairness, justice and inclusiveness.

The group made the demand at a Technical Committee meeting held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, where it deliberated extensively on the forthcoming elections.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by its Convener, Chief (Dr) Adesunbo Onitiri, the group also declared its full support for the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.

The indigenes further resolved that the positions of Governor, Deputy Governor and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2027 should be occupied by bona fide indigenes of the state.

According to the group, the position is anchored on the need to promote equity, preserve identity and ensure broader stakeholder inclusion in the governance of Lagos State.

It outlined key criteria for aspirants seeking these positions, stressing that candidates must be bona fide indigenes with verifiable ancestral roots, possess requisite academic and professional qualifications, and demonstrate proven experience in governance, leadership or enterprise in both the public and private sectors.

The group also emphasised that aspirants must have a track record of integrity, free from corruption or criminal infractions, and must exhibit sound character, discipline and exemplary personal conduct.

Other requirements include verifiable achievements within and beyond Lagos State, commitment to family and societal values, as well as the ability to combine independent thinking with collaborative leadership and humility.

The group added that it would engage constructively with all qualified aspirants with a view to identifying and supporting candidates best suited to lead Lagos State into the future.
