An Ogun State High Court in Kobape, Abeokuta, has sentenced Lekan Adekanbi, Ahmed Odetola, and Waheed Adeniyi to death by hanging for the brutal murders of Kehinde Fatinoye, his wife Bukola, and their son Oreoluwa on January 1, 2023.
The Fatinoye family was attacked in their Ibara GRA home after returning from a New Year’s crossover service.
The assailants, led by their driver Adekanbi, broke in around 2 a.m., killing the couple and setting their bodies and the house on fire.
Their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son were tied up and thrown into the Ogun River. While Oreoluwa drowned, the adopted son survived.
Adekanbi confessed in an interview that he orchestrated the attack after the Fatinoyes refused to increase his salary or grant him a loan.
He invited Odetola and Adeniyi to rob the family, with the trio attacking the couple as they entered their home.
They forced Kehinde to transfer N1,102,000 to Adekanbi’s bank account before killing them.
Following the killings, Adekanbi tried to escape custody by faking an illness but was later apprehended after a police investigation led to his arrest in Abeokuta on January 21, 2023. His accomplices were arrested shortly after.
During the trial, Justice Basirat Adebowale ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, sentencing the three men to death by hanging.
Other defendants received varying sentences, including Adekanbi’s wife and mother, who were convicted for obstructing justice.
  1. The defendants were also found guilty of armed robbery, arson, and perverting justice.
The case has drawn widespread attention to the tragic loss of the Fatinoye family and the ruthless nature of the crime.
