The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking Initiative (NACAT) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Udom Emmanuel, former governor of Akwa Ibom, over allegations of misappropriating state funds.
In a petition submitted to the EFCC in Abuja, NACAT accused Emmanuel of diverting over N1.5 trillion from the state’s coffers. The petition, signed by NACAT officials and Akwa Ibom community representatives, claims the former governor’s actions led to widespread corruption, embezzlement, and the acquisition of massive properties for his family.
NACAT’s investigation found that despite over N3 trillion entering the state treasury during Emmanuel’s tenure, a significant N700 billion remained unaccounted for. The group also cited a debt of over N500 billion and abandoned projects worth N300 billion across the state.
The petition alleges that Emmanuel awarded contracts to companies linked to his allies and misused security votes, claiming over N4.5 billion was allocated to security agencies, though it was never received by them. Additionally, the group claims he mismanaged over N100 billion in a failed industrial project.
NACAT also accused Emmanuel of using state funds to fund private ventures, including a fertilizer company linked to a shell company in the U.S. The group further alleged that Emmanuel may have ties to Globus Bank and used microfinance institutions to launder money.
In response, Emmanuel’s spokesperson dismissed the allegations as baseless, defending the former governor’s record as one of transparency and good governance.
